Austin Beer Week Events at Whole Foods Bee Cave

Written by Emily O'Shaughnessy | October 30, 2013

One of the things I love about Austin is how it seems to effortlessly flow from one organized event or festival into the next. The month started out with ACL Music Fest, then moved on to the Austin Film Festival, Texas Book Festival and now here we are closing out the month with Austin Beer Week. Yes, there’s a week for that.

Austin Beer Week (ABW), now in it’s fourth year, is a “multi-day, multi-event, brewer-centric showcase of all things craft beer.” It benefits Texas Craft Brewers Guild , a non-profit dedicated to promoting and educating the public about craft beer.

It’s a Marathon, Not a Sprint

Austin Beer Week hosts 200+ events over a nine-day period. Activities include food pairings, special tappings, book signings, movie premieres, trivia nights, and other unique events such as a burlesque show, ping pong tournament and even keg-lifting competitions.

Many of the events are held in central Austin locations, but there are several participating venues a little further out of the city. Fortunately for those of us in the Lake Travis area, the Whole Foods Bee Cave  is one, hosting four official events throughout the week. They’re also offering happy hour pricing all day on Halloween for anyone dressed in costume. So go ahead an stop by on your way home from the office – you can tell them you’re Lumbergh from Office Space. Who will argue with that? You may even get a free pint.

Schmidt Family Barbecue Now Open in Bee Cave

Written by Emily O'Shaughnessy | October 29, 2013

It’s open! The highly anticipated Schmidt Family Barbecue finally opened its doors in Bee Cave this week. For fans of both Kruez Market and Smitty’s Market in Lockhart this is cause for major celebration.

There’s a long, interesting backstory about how Schmidt Family Barbecue came to land at Hwy 71 and Bee Cave Road. If you’re not familiar with the infamous Lockhart “barbefeud” here’s a cliff notes version:  The first restaurant originated from Kruez Market, a local meat market and grocery store in Lockhart in the early 1900s. Years later, longtime employee Edgar “Smitty” Schmidt purchased it from the Kruez family. He successfully ran the restaurant until he retired and sold it to his sons in 1984. In 1999, Edgar’s son Rick moved the market to a new location about a quarter mile up the road. Shortly thereafter, Edgar’s daughter Nina Schmidt Sells opened Smitty’s Market in the old location.

Tony C's: New York-Style Pizza in the Lake Travis Area

Written by Todd Hower | October 25, 2013

Tony C's

What makes pizza New York-style? It’s that thin hand-tossed crust that is firm and crispy. It’s having the option to grab a huge triangle to-go and eating it folded as you walk down the sidewalk. It’s not a slice of pizza that flops into your hand like a wet piece a cardboard when you pick it up and try to eat it.

How does a New York-style pizza get that signature crispy crust? It starts by using a coal-fired hearthstone oven with a temperature between 800 and 1000 degrees. The high temperature cooks the pizza in less than five minutes and produces that unbeatable bottom, charred edges, and caramelized toppings. Any other way and you’ll end up with a cooked top and soggy bottom pizza.

The Benches of Bee Cave

Written by Todd Hower | October 24, 2013

Nailed

Next time you’re out shopping or dining at the Hill Country Galleria, see if you can find The Benches of Bee Cave located along the sidewalks and in front of shops and restaurants throughout the Galleria.

If you’re spending time with your children, it’s a fun game of exploring and a great way to make them aware of the arts. When you find one, you’ll have the perfect reason to take a seat and maybe have a few photo opportunities.

There are currently seven benches and each one is an original work of art. The Benches are a project of the Bee Cave Arts Foundation. Eventually the BCAF envisions about 50 benches installed throughout areas in the community and Bee Cave Central Park.

Yes or No to Car Dealerships in Lakeway?

Written by Todd Hower | October 21, 2013

Keep Lakeway Beautiful

Lakeway City Council is considering a zoning amendment for C-4 zoning that will allow auto dealerships in the city limits. During the last meeting held on October 2nd, the Zoning and Planning Commission recommended approval of the amendment by a vote of 4-3. Of the fourteen people that spoke during the public hearing, eight were in favor of the amendment and six were opposed.

This is likely to be a close call, so be sure to show up at the Lakeway City Council meeting tonight at 6:30 pm to voice your opinion.

If you’re not familiar with the zoning amendment, you can see the full Staff Report here and read an overview of the proposed amendment, the draft amendment to the Zoning Ordinance, information provided by the North Lakeway Village Committee, and a concerns list.
