It’s the first week of school in the Lake Travis area, so parents, students and teachers are getting back into the swing of things like early mornings, homework and, of course — traffic. The snack-packed, Under Armour-clad, manicured, sun-kissed and savvy leaders of tomorrow are ready to see their buddies and hit the books (and the cafeterias, playgrounds, gyms, fields). In the spirit of back-to-school season, here are our cheers & jeers:
One of the great things about living in the Lake Travis area is we don’t have to leave our convenient “bubble” for exceptional dermatology and cosmetic treatments. We have some of the best dermatologists in Austin right in our own backyard.
So if you’re seeing a few discolored spots on your legs from sun exposure or you need a little vial of youth serum to ease all of that squinting in the sunshine (dang crow’s feet!), this post is for you.
Austin may be known as the Music Capital of the World, but it’s also home to a thriving fashion and retail industry. Yesterday, on Design Lab Day (as proclaimed by Austin Mayor Lee Leffingwell), Design Lab opened its doors at Oasis, Texas. This 3,000 square foot showroom overlooking Lake Travis is the brainchild of Austin’s most well-known designer Linda Asaf. It features over 27 diverse Texas-based fashion designers who are at the top of their game.
Located adjacent to the Oasis Restaurant at Lake Travis, Design Lab has an industrial-vintage theme with ample room to house current Texas designers. It can easily accommodate new lines and seasonal or pop-up collections, which makes it a relevant hub for Texas designers as industry growth continues. I’ve had the pleasure of working with Asaf at various events over the years, so I know if this is her vision it will be impeccable.
We’re just a few days away from Steiner Ranch Concert in the Park on August 16 featuring live music from VHS Band, Shoulda Turned Left, Annie & Kate with Courtlyn James and Suede. This year, the event will be collecting clothes for the LISD Clothes Closet and School Supplies for the Middle and High School students in need.
In addition to the live music, there will be lots of awesome sponsors and vendors including your favorite resource for Lake Travis area happenings, US! Yep, Lake Travis Lifestyle will be there with a nifty photo booth to capture the fun and an amazing giveaway you won’t want to miss!
Stop by the Lake Travis Lifestyle booth for a chance to win your own private Tour & Tasting for 10 people at Oasis Texas Brewing Company with transportation provided by Sherpalux. This party package retails for $800!
When it comes to learning more about Texas critters, I decided to reach out to the Critterman himself, David Kleven. Critterman was recently in the Lake Travis area at the Lake Travis Community Library talking about wildlife with a couple of his critter pals on-hand to educate and entertain — “edutain” — everyone.
Critterman has been featured on the Discovery Network’s Animal Planet and has worked with other famous animal experts like Jack Hanna, Jeff Corwin and the Kratt brothers.
According to Kleven, the most popular critter people call and email him about is our slithery friend, the snake. Obviously snakes are scary since many of them are poisonous. Then again, many are actually harmless garden snakes that fear humans as much as we fear them. I had the opportunity to discuss a few critters with Kleven for a quick summertime education:
